Perinatal / Parenting Therapy

The perinatal period describes the time when someone becomes pregnant till a year after the birth. During this, not only does an infant undergo developmental milestones, but so does a parent. This is due to biological changes, as well as environmental ones. This can be a time filled with joy, excitement, and wonder. It can also be filled with anxiety, sadness, and loss. If you feel the later, you are not alone. Many soon-to-be or new parents struggle with conflicting emotions and thoughts that can feel overwhelming and cause disruptions to daily living, including difficulties bonding with their baby. Due to societal expectations, people can experience fear and shame about reaching out for help.

For parents past the perinatal period, this can also be true. Raising children can bring up a lot of unhealed parts that might have gone unrecognized before. Parents might also feel as if they have lost their identity and don’t have the capacity to engage with activities and people like they used to. It’s common for parents to want to break certain generation patterns, but they feel they are stuck and unsure of how to move forward.

No matter what stage of parenting someone is in, their mental health matters. They deserve to receive the care they need, in order to feel empowered, hopeful, and fulfilled. At Encircle, our team is here to walk alongside parents on this journey toward mental wellness and healing.
